What is the "pied piper"
muscial?
|
How does
it help me? |
|
The "Pied Piper" is a musical written specifically for
Primary School children. With all the pressures of curriculum and
so on, it's increasingly difficult to create school productions.
Because you get all the music pre-packaged, "Pied Piper"
is something that is easier and effective to put together and perform.
|
The pied piper is essentially an educational resource pack for
teachers. On the basis that there's rarely the time or inclination
to compose, rehearse and produce full-scale musical productions,
the Pied Piper fits perfectly. Furthermore, the musical and its
story can be used
as the basis for cross-curricular work

45 minutes of original music (20 minutes of songs, plus extra instrumental
tracks for dancing, raps etc.)
9 songs, easy to learn and fun to sing.
Backing tracks for all the songs to sing along to.
Script ideas to start you off and the ability to build your own
script to suit your class and their skills.
Songs that allow all musical abilities to take part.
A mixture of playful, soulful and just downright
funky songs, that kids love to perform!
Vocal tracks to practice and learn to.
Audio files to use on your website, edit on your computer and insert
into backing tracks.
|
The recordings are not big orchestral productions. In fact, this
is intentional. They have been created very simply, mostly on
standard
keyboard equipment - exactly the type of thing you are likely to
have in your school! It's amazing what you can do with these instruments!
It's quite possible you may have a student who is interested in
keyboards, and may be able to recreate their own versions of the
songs. Please encourage them to do so!
Feel free to download this audio
montage of the songs, that should give you a feel (please
note, in order to shorten download time, this sample is MP3, and
is of lower quality)
|
| is it easy to perform? |
what
ages would it suit? |
|
Yes! That's the whole point. Not all teachers play the piano or
read music, but that needn't stop you. This is designed to be as
easy as learning a chart hit.
All you actually need to perform this musical, is a CD player and
your imagination. (And some willing kids of course!)
|
Pretty much
all primary school ages, especially 5 to 10. At the first performance
we had all the primary children involved. There's a good scope for
a range of acting parts. It's absolutely perfect for small rural schools
that have mixed-age classes. |
| I've got other talented
pupils, what variations can I make? |
can I include everyone? |
| "Pied Piper" is extremely
flexible. You could for example, just perform all the songs for a
20 minute production. Alternatively, add some script to give the children
a chance to try their acting. Or take it one stage further, as we
did in the original performance, add a "competition" to
find a solution to the rats problem - this allows the class to perform
any of their party-pieces - singing, juggling, telling poetry etc.
In the premiere this allowed us to involve the entire school of 90
children and make up an entire 60 minute concert! |
Most probably,
yes! Obviously there are a few key roles, such as the Piper
and the Mayor. However, there's lots of scope for general "crowd"
and "children" parts, and of course rats! You could make
costume-making (e.g. rats masks) part of the related schoolwork. |
